Passenger with heroin arrested at Amtrak station last monthBy Gwen Filosa, The Times-PicayuneJanuary 05, 2010This gift didn't make it to Christmas morning. A 26-year-old woman is facing prison time after federal agents caught her with a pound and a half of heroin last month at the New Orleans Amtrak station on Dec. 11, authorities say. The heroin was found inside a small box wrapped in Christmas paper that Cristina Williams, of Los Angeles, had packed into her suitcase for the one-way train ride from her hometown to New Orleans that she paid for in cash, they say. The ticket purchase drew the attention of Drug Enforcement Administration agents, who stopped Williams as she was leaving the Amtrak car. She consented to a search of her things, including the apparent Christmas gift. "She immediately uttered that she was supposed to deliver the package upon arrival to New Orleans and that it was not hers, " Special Agent Jason Gill wrote in an affidavit filed at U.S. District Court. Agents unwrapped the box to find a vacuum-sealed plastic bag filled with 1.56 pounds of white powder later identified as heroin, authorities say. Williams posted a $30,000 commercial bond on Dec. 23 and is due to stand trial Feb. 1 before Chief Judge Sarah Vance. Williams waived prosecution by indictment, agreeing to stand trial based on the government's filing of information. At the train station last month, Williams told agents that an acquaintance named Mel Savage paid her $400 to take the train to New Orleans and deliver the package to a man she knows only as "B." It was her second trip in six months, Gill reported. Williams had sent text messages to Savage on her cell phone before, during and after Williams was approached by agents at the station. U.S. Attorney Jim Letten's office accused Williams of conspiring to sell heroin, a federal crime that carries five to 40 years in prison.
